YouSendIt Powers White House News Photographers Association Student Competition

Students nationwide submitting photos via YouSendIt's digital file delivery service for chance to be named Student Photographer of the Year; have work featured in traveling exhibit

CAMPBELL, Calif. – February 25, 2009 – Thousands of students across the country will be using YouSendIt's digital file delivery service to submit their work for the White House News Photographers Association's annual photography competition. Entrants are now using YouSendIt's Dropbox service to quickly and easily submit the most memorable and historical images they have taken over the past year.

Each student will submit a portfolio of their work that includes single photos from categories such as News, Sports and Feature, and also a picture story containing multiple images on one subject. The student with the most outstanding portfolio will receive a $1,000 award, two tickets to the annual WHNPA black tie gala in Washington, D.C., customarily attended by the sitting U.S. President, and have their work featured in the WHNPA Eyes of History(TM) awards book and traveling exhibition.

Replacing the former method of submitting entries through a file transfer protocol (FTP) site, YouSendIt created a Dropbox specifically for the WHNPA competition, configured and activated within hours, turning photo submission into a simple three-click process. Students follow a Web site link, enter their name, browse for the file containing their portfolio and click 'send'. Students can deliver up to 2GB of information through YouSendIt at any one time, with the option to upload additional content as many times as needed. YouSendIt is expected to deliver more than 3,000 thousand high resolution images to the WHNPA for the competition.

"In previous competitions we used a traditional FTP site for contestants to submit photos, which was time-consuming and confusing for a lot of students," said Heidi Elswick, Executive Director of the WHNPA. "When we discovered YouSendIt, we were thrilled with how simple, convenient and reliable it was. Since implementing YouSendIt, we have dramatically increased the speed and ease at which we are able to receive and review the thousands of photos that are submitted each year for our contest."

The WHPNA was established in 1921 by camera and motion-picture photographers who covered the daily activities of the president and the White House. Over the years, WHNPA photographers have covered life-changing historical events such as the destruction of the Hindenberg, Harry Truman the morning after he won surprise re-election, the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, and other once-in-a-lifetime events.

"We are proud to be part of a competition that encourages students to record and share their point of view on historical events," said Ranjith Kumaran, YouSendIt Founder and CTO. "As the leading service on the Web for securely sending, receiving and tracking digital files, we're happy to provide a service for students to reliably and efficiently deliver their work to the WHNPA."

Deadline for competition submissions is 11:59 p.m., EST on March 1, 2009. The student with the winning portfolio will be selected on March 7, 2009 and immediately notified of their win and invited to the annual WHNPA Black Tie Gala held on May 30, 2009 at The Ritz Carlton in Washington, DC, where they will be presented with their awards.
